Message Since this is a visco-elastic damper, it is not very sensitive to frequency, ie. change the frequency by a few hundred hertz and the damping effect is about the same. The engineers at Nissan would certainly have taken the damping response of the material vs. frequency, and checked that at the resonance frequency of the crank they are getting the damping they require. But as is common with engineering practices, they probably have a high safety factor built in.

Basically what I am saying is:

1. The viscoelastic damper is not very sensitive to frequency

2. The resonance frequency would have to be very significantly altered (most probably by orders of magnitude) to affect the safety factor

3. The resonance frequency of the crank would not be significantly altered by a lightened flywheel as the flywheel end behaves more like a clamped/fixed end. In a mass spring model, weights at a fixed end has no effect on the resonance frequency.
